On Twitter I’ve been posting screenshots and short video clips, but I needed a bit more space to properly gush about this game.
Super Mario Odyssey is pure joy. There’s a certain giddiness and excitement woven into the fabric of it. Mario is expressive and cartoony. The colors pop off the screen. Really loving the music in each kingdom. It oozes charm and is filled to the brim with Nintendo magic. I’ve never really been into Mario’s 3D outings & after Yoshi’s Island, I don’t feel like there’s really been a game within the platforming series that has really connected with me in. although, I’ll admit that 3D Land was kinda fun, but I wasn’t 100% on board. But, Odyssey feels like Nintendo really delivering the goods.
I don’t know what else I can say that hasn’t been said in a proper review, but as I’ve said to coworkers and friends that I talk games with & have posted to Twitter: This is the most fun I’ve had with a Super Mario game since Super Mario World. I could wax nostalgic forever about how much I loved that game & played all day on the Christmas that I got my Super Nintendo so, for me to get a similar feeling means a lot. I only wish that I had a Winter/Christmas break away from work & responsibilities so that I can sit and play until my heart’s content. Is Mario the perfect holiday season game? On a good note - I have finished my work week as of yesterday and won’t be running errands until tomorrow so, I’m definitely planning to spend more time playing today.
worth mentioning: I’ve seen a lot about having to play the game with motion controls. Well, I’m happy to report that the game is totally playable in handheld mode. Sure, playing on tv with the motion controls gives you a few other techniques that Mario can pull off that might help with moon collecting & it does look splendid on a big screen, but I’ve played a good chunk of the game while lying in bed with the Switch in portable mode and haven’t had any problems progressing. So, play however you like. That’s the point of the Switch, right?
